“Sex is fashion, so let’s get trendy,” goes a line from a 1980s-sounding song by Curry and Coco.

The French electro-rock duo performs at The Wall (這牆) in Taipei on Wednesday, along with local indie favorites DJ Spykee Fat and electronica group KbN.

In addition to their synth-pop/punk sound, Curry and Coco will be bringing plenty of ambition, judging from tracks like Who’s Next, in whose chorus the band hollers “Who’s next? We say us!”

Then there are the catchy hooks and anthemic choruses such as “we’re the top of the pop,” which make the duo sound like they’re hungry for genuine stardom in spite of their hipster looks (scruffy beards and messy hair) and tongue-in-cheek attitude.

“Totally, but we always want to keep laughing about us,” singer and keyboardist Sylvain Przybylski wrote in an e-mail interview with the Taipei Times.

“International ambition” is also why they sing exclusively in English, said the 26-year-old, who hails from northern France and formed the group four years ago with drummer and backing singer Thomas Priem.

Disco, new wave and post-punk are a big part of the duo’s sound on its debut album We Are Beauty .

“We wanted to mix those two energies together, disco sensuality and punk rawness,” wrote Priem, 29, who balances the duo’s synth melodies with intense rock drumming. He plays a full drum kit, and makes the band seem like an electronica version of The White Stripes.

Przybylski says their other influences include AC/DC, Blondie, Gang of Four, Serge Gainsbourg, Charles Bukowski and Cindy Lauper.

Priem and Przybylski are friends from childhood, tease each other like brothers in interviews and play up their close connection in their album art and videos as well as on stage. As for the band’s name, Przybylski says they haven’t yet decided who’s Curry and who’s Coco.

But one thing’s certain: the duo is out to have a lot of fun. When asked what their audience in Taipei can expect on Wednesday, Przybylski wrote, “[To] get physical!!”
